Command Sergeant Major Tamara E. Mitchell served dual hatted as the Georgia Army National Guard G-1 Sergeant Major (SGM) while also serving as the Battalion (BN) CSM at the 148th Brigade Support Battalion. As the G-1 SGM, she is the senior-enlisted advisor to the G[1]1 and the State CSM on enlisted actions affecting over 11,000 Soldiers. She is responsible for the health, welfare, and mentorship of over 60 enlisted Soldiers within G-1. While also providing guidance and mentorship to subordinate MSC S-1 teams to ensure quality strength objectives are met. CSM Mitchell also supervises and ensures the success of the Enlisted Promotion System (EPS): provides input and oversight on all enlisted boards including EPS Centralized Boards, Qualitative Retention Boards, Statewide Vacancy Boards and Senior Non-Commissioned Assignment Board. CSM Mitchell also advises and provides input on Soldier Readiness Processing to ensure mobilization readiness. As the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Command, the CSM carries out policies and enforces standards for the performance, training, and conduct of enlisted Soldiers; gives advice and initiates recommendations to the Commander and staff on matters pertaining to enlisted Soldiers and logistical operations. CSM Mitchell communicates with supported units, verify the quality of support and to resolve issues for Soldiers in direct support of other units; provides technical and tactical advice to the Commander on the planning, training, preparation, and execution of all BSB missions.
Command Sergeant Major Mitchell's career began in January 1995 when she enlisted in the United States Army as a 91B Combat Field Medic and later shipped in Jan 1996. After completing AIT, she was assigned to 560th Ambulance Company in Korea, then later to C Company 115th FSB, 1st CAV at Fort Hood, TX. In April 2000 Command Sergeant Major Mitchell left Active Duty, joined the Rhode Island Army National Guard in 2001 and was assigned to HD STARC in Cranston, Rhode Island as a combat field medic. In September 2004 Command Sergeant Major Mitchell joined the GAARNG and served in the 48th IBCT also as a medic, and 6 months later was offered a set of ADOS orders serving as the MACOM Career Counselor. In October 2006, she was accepted into the Title 32 AGR program as a 68W, where she re-classed to 42A Human Resources Sergeant. In April 2009, she deployed to Afghanistan as a Human Resource NCO with the 48th IBCT. In August 2010, after the return of deployment she was assigned to HHC 348th BSB as the BN PSNCO where she spent the next three years.
In August 2013 Command Sergeant Major was the first Enlisted Soldier for the state of Georgia to participate in the Title 32 – Title 10 Swap program. She was assigned to Personnel Division Retirement Services (HRP) as the Physical Disability NCOIC at the National Guard Bureau. After serving 1 year, she was then promoted to Master Sergeant and was reassigned to Family Programs (HRS). Command Sergeant Major Mitchell served as the Contracting Officer Representive (COR) for the Family Assistance Centers (FAC), and was the Acting Division SGM for the 2 years she served with HRS. During this time, she attended the US. Army Sergeants Major Academy nonresident, which was a 2-year commitment. While attending Sergeant Major Academy she also completed her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Kaplan University. In July 2016 Command Sergeant Major Mitchell was recommended and selected to serve as the Senior Enlisted Leader (SEL)/ Senior Human Resources NCO for the Programs and Resources/Comptroller Directorate NGB J8.
After serving a total of 4 years, Command Sergeant Major Mitchell returned home to the GAARNG (Georgia Army National Guard) where she was assigned to HHC 201st Regional Support Group (Homeland Response Force). In 2018 Command Sergeant Major Mitchell was promoted and reassigned as GAARNG G1 SGM. Dec 2019 Command Sergeant Major Mitchell was the first African American female to be selected to serve as BN CSM in the state of Georgia and the first female to serve as a BN CSM in the 48th IBCT (Infantry Brigade Combat Team).
Command Sergeant Major Mitchell's military and civilian education include BN Career Counselor, Equal Opportunity, SARC/VA, Master Resilience (MRT), Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education, Unit Supply, US Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 42, Reserve Components National Security Course, MILPO Orientation Course. She holds a master’s in Forensic Psychology from Purdue Global University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration as well as an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration from Kaplan University.
